The cylinder on the tea cart
holds Arbutus beach glass
some say sea glass
and that is, perhaps,
more fitting
broken glass made beautiful
surviving years of salty waves
We collect the sanded-smooth pieces
and stones
and unbroken shells, broken shells
from
Block Island, Edgartown
Nags Head, Narragansett
Cape Cod, Cape May
Laguna, La Jolla
Shelter Island, Manasquan
A spray of beach glass
a clatter of stones
the former homes of sea creatures
the geography of us
At Dory’s Cove
we face west
the sun seemingly slips
beneath the water’s surface—
we stand together
as daylight wanes
our past urging us forward
