Between The Lines

Call me when you are walking your dog
driving to your office
weeding your yard
Call me to kill time in traffic
when you have nothing better to do

I am not insulted to be your distraction
I am grateful for the unhurried conversation
that drifts sometimes to things that matter
hints at what is in your heart

I follow your words like breadcrumbs to
hidden places – unspoken words behind words
I am still desperate to know your
dreams and disappointments
do you blame me

You interrupt yourself to yell at the driver that cuts you off
I hold my breath, hoping you will come back to your story
hoping you might call again on your way home
